  • I've the same problem.

After a number of problem with Windows 10, the tech-support take control of my PC tu upgrade and do a fresh install of Windows 10 from the iso file.

Since the installation is done, my Windows Licence is invalid...

  • Same problem, Ive a legit windows 8.1 and decided to download the windows 10 iso myself. During the installation it wouldn't take my key so I decided to skip that part and activate later. Once in Windows 10 I tried to enter my serial for windows 8.1 but it gives me 0xc004e016.

    Anyone?

  • I have 2 personal 8.1 serials and none works.

This is a nice start for Microsoft. I am unhappy with 8.1, totally upset with windows 10 installation and I will go back to Windows 7 and I will check back for new Windows in couple years.

  • The same problem. I've got Windows 8 Pro key. Windows 8.1 Pro activates successfully with it. But after upgrading from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro it loose my activation key and does not accept Windows 8 key. Same error: 0xc004e016.

  • If it helps, I too have the same problem. I have a legal Win8.0/1 pro code (an upgrade mind you) and tried a clean install from the downloaded ISO. Microsoft need to get this right. You either offer a free upgrade or not to the users. There is no way my parents/family would be able to deal with this issue. I have NO solution. Surely this must have been tested, surely...

  • I've just been speaking with a Microsoft Answer Tech and he said the solution is to reinstall your previous OS (Windows 8.1 Pro in my case) and to upgrade to Windows 10 using Windows Update, instead of through downloading the ISO - which is what I did.

  • I upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 using Windows Update but still got 0xc004e016.

  • I did an upgrade of a genuine win 8.1 pro to windows 10 pro, but it hung on 77% and rolled back to 8.1, so I wiped, did a full clean install of windows 10 pro and am getting this error on when trying to activate. It's absolutely disgraceful tbh.

  • I have Windows 8.1 Pro edition as well, but I did a complete new install on a new SSD and tried using my key. I'm having this issue as well.

  • I get the same error code when trying to change key for activation: 0xc004e016. Upgrading from 8.1 Pro, where the key was working, using the media creation tool. The key was purchased from Microsoft for Win 8 Pro.

  • I don't know what Microsoft has done, but after day of 0xc004e016 problems and waiting for a solution, I klicked on the "activate" button just to see what happened, and lo and behold, Windows 10 was activated.

  • Yes, activation I ok for me too. Just wait for one day.

  • We are experiencing an issue with our activation service that can result in some PCs failing to activate after the upgrade.

  • Jeff, so can I do clean install Win 10 Pro if I've activated my copy of Win 10 Pro with case of upgrading from Win 8.1 Pro? Just want clean answer. Don't have enough time for manipulating with OS's such as free space on my SSD. You know - Windows.Old is heavy enough.

  • Andrew,

If your Windows 10 activation status is "Windows is activated," then you can perform a clean install.

  • Hi Leroxz,

    Thank you for your question.

By my understanding, you use Window 10 from Window 8.1. if Window 8.1 has been activated before we update it to Window 10, we could not activated it. Because Window 10 will be activated automatically,  we could not be worry about it.

If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.

    Best Regard,

    Jim

  • Hi all,

Other users have occurred the similar issue: After upgrade from Windows 8.1, Windows 10 is failed to be activated with Windows 8 or 8.1 key, and the error is 0xC004E016.

And the workaround could be "Revert back to Windows 8.1, make sure the machine was activated then upgrade again."

  • I'm having same issue. Was on 8.1 and last month I took the free upgrade to 10. Everything went fine. Then on the 29th when the free upgrade ended my Windows 10 now says its not activated. Tried using my Windows 8.1 key and getting same error code 0xc004e016. Spoke to 7-8 microsoft techs w/o any results yet. They keep passing me to another tech. Many times I'm disconnected and have to start over again in the queue. One tech said I had to contact the purchaser of my PC. Duh-pc purchased from Apple and Windows 8.1 purchased from Microsoft Store. Last night I was working with a level 2 tech, he put me on hold and then he was gone. Called back and they were closed for the day. Now does that beat all, hang up with a client because it's time to go home.
