Windows Update Failing

    Question

  • All my Windows 8.1 machines are not able to update from my WSUS server.  Windows 7 machines are fine.  After a reboot this is the log I get:

11:37:37:269 916 564 AU User login event timer expired for session id: 2.

Windows update just sits there for over a week doing nothing.  Anyone got any ideas?  I have reregistered dlls, ran Windows update diag, rebuilt a pc and tried it from scratch.

    Thanks

  • Hi figgy1978,

Based on your description, for Windows server issue, we’d suggest you to confirm that in Windows server forum first for good measure.

  • The issue isn't on the server though.  Only on Windows 8.1 machines.  Windows 7 and all servers are fine.

    Thanks

It's possible that your WSUS needs to be patched. Have you updated your WSUS with any of the WSUS patches released over the last couple of years? (not all patches for WSUS are offered by WU/MU, you may have to download and install those updates manually).

These updates do several things including dropping a new version of the client self-update packages, so that older clients perform self-update, and also so that newer OS clients can be properly supported.

What Windows version is your WSUS running on?
What version of WSUS shows in the WSUS console main-screen?
What version of WUAgent is on the Win8.1 computers?

The WSUS updates I'm referring to are:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/2720211
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/2734608
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/2828185
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/2938066

Don [doesn't work for MSFT, and they're probably glad about that ;]

  • It is on Windows 2012 R2

    WSUS Version 6.3.9600.18057

We have the latest agent on the 8.1 computers.  I know this takes a while but should take a few hours and not weeks.

We have the last update on.  Previous updates are for version 3.

    Thanks
