Help! Intermittent Booting to PXE w/ DHCP+WDS on MS 2012 Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I encountered issue with our DHCP+WDS server where some clients has intermittent FAIL on boot to PXE. The errors encountered were:

PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011
    PXE-E32 : TFTP open timeout
    PXE-E35: TFTP read timeout

PXE-E16: No offeres were received <== when booting from UEFI clients

The weird thing about this is for normal clients (not UEFI clients) with intermittent boot problem, systems has onboard Ethernet port. Systems that are using USB Ethernet dongle to boot, can boot with no issue. For UEFI clients, regardless of its booting procedure, it will encounter intermittent boot fail.

My configuration is very simple: Using only 1 server w/ DHCP and WDS as roles + Symantec Endpoint Protection Unmanaged. In WDS, "Do not listen on DHCP ports" and "Configure DHCP options to indicate that this is also a PXE server" are checked. In DHCP > Server options, "060 PXEClient" is checked too. Port 66 andn 67 are unchecked.

  • Hi NewBTech,

According to PXE-E55 and it seem DHCP and proxy DHCP services on the same machine, we may verify if DHCP service run on port 67 UDP and the proxyDHCP service run on port 4011 UDP, check if the firewall is blocking port 4011 packet.

Since the issue is intermittent, we may use network monitor to perform network traffic capture on DHCP\WDS server, compare the DHCP packets when the process is successful and the process is failed. Check if it could help us to find out the cause.

    Network monitor download:
