Volume license activation (KMS infrastructure) cannot activate Windows 7 Pro. on Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010 ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My enterprise has perchased many licenses of Windows 7 Pro.  including KMS activation license key.  And I have deployed the KMS activation infrastructure in my enterprise network.

Recently, we bought a set of Opliplex 3010 , 7010 & 9010 PCs, nearly 100 PCs. All of them are N-series without pre-installed Windows 7 by Dell factory.

I tried deploy OS and many enterprise APPs to these PCs through network , using MDT.

The OS image I used in MDT is Window 7 Pro Volume License Edition which was from Microsoft volume license site. But the KMS method cannot activate Windows 7 Pro. on Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010 .

After deployment, the PCs telled that the the volume license key is invalid, MAK is required. Windows cannot be activated.

But the issue has never come out on any other computers of our enterprise before.

I have been searching for the solution on internet, but get nothing. And some one said that the BIOS somewhere is locked or modified by Dell to prevent prated operating system. But the OS and KMS we are using is lawful.

Can any one tell me how to activate our volume licensed Windows 7 Pro. by the KMS infrastructure in my enterprse? Thanks!

  • Hi,

did you purchase these computers without any OEM Windows license?

Volume Licensing agreements only offer "upgrade", not "full" - an existing license such as OEM, will have the necessary SLIC table in BIOS populated, and this is usually what VL products look for, to confirm legitimacy.

You can use the MGADiag utility from MS to confirm the SLIC table in BIOS has been populated.

Without the SLIC table populated in BIOS, it may be necessary for you to use MAK not KMS

  • 1. If I use MAK to activate these PCs, can SLIC be populated?

No, the SLIC table is stored in BIOS, and this can only be populated by the OEM.

    2. KMS activation method is only for upgrade, right?  But why can any other PCs (not Optiplex 3010 7010 or 9010) without OEM license be activated by KMS server?

Check, but you may find that such PC's do have the SLIC table populated.

  • Thank you for your great reply!

    I have 2 questions:

    1. If I use MAK to activate these PCs, can SLIC be populated?

    2. KMS activation method is only for upgrade, right?  But why can any other PCs (not Optiplex 3010 7010 or 9010) without OEM license be activated by KMS server?

  • The presence of a SLIC table is not required for KMS activation - but if one is present, it must be valid.

Long Bo - if you care to post an MGADiag report of one of the 'failing' systems, we can take a look and see what the problem is.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

did you purchase these computers without any OEM Windows license? (check for a genuine sticker on the computer casing, or contact the vendor/manufacturer)

Without the SLIC table populated in BIOS, it may be necessary for you to use MAK not KMS.

Ok, so that's the technical steps out of the way.
Note that you must still confirm licensing entitlement exists for these non-OEM-licensed machines, to ensure you are correctly licensed to install the VL Windows product and to use the VL key (MAK).

Based on my previous experience, if these computers are not OEM-licensed, you are not entitled to install Windows at all, unless you have purchased the applicable "Retail/FPP" licenses, or, purchased a Get-Genuine package.
For assistance with that, contact your reseller or MSFT VL team.
