How to assign a team name to a new generic resource RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am currently using project server 2007. We need to create a number generic resource(inorder to assign works to team instead of individual resources) and assign it team names. We have created the required team name in the look up table and mapped it to team name custom field. However, we are unable to map the 'Team Assignment Pool' to a generic resource because "Team Details" Field along with Team assignment pool is not available. but able to do the same for an enterprise resource("Team Details" Field along with Team assignment pool is available). Please advice on how to proceed.

  • Hi Khaldun,

The resources assigned to a team cannot be generic. The objectif of team assignments is that the users from the team will pick-up the tasks and self assigned them to the team tasks. Thus it cannot be handle with generic resources that do not do timehseets or tasks update by definition.

    Hope this helps,

  • Agreeing with Guillaume, here is a possible work around.

You could create the resources as non-generic resources, while using a generic name (Ex: You call the resource Database Developer, but leave the Generic box unchecked).

This will allow you to assign the team, and also assign a default assignment owner, who you can set to be the team lead.

This approach might lead into tricky scenarios when you are looking at Resource Allocations or any reports, but for most part will work. You could also create an additional flag to mark these kind resources and filter them out easily out of reports.
