Print Events in event viewer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

First questions so please be gentle ... :)

for my sins I have been asked to provide a way of accoutning for printing jobs presented to all our pinters on our 8 print servers...

I'm using the Microsoft Log Parser to get the necessary bits out of each event 10 entry on all servers (printer, user doc name etc) and then putting it into MYSql for access from a nice PHP from end..

    My question is this...

Is it possible to configure the event viewer to log wheather the print job is colour and/or duplex?? If not is there anywhere that this info would be preseent on a Print server running W2K3..???

    Thanks

    AL.

  • afaik, this is not feasible, as there are different type of printers and if you want to achive something like this, may be if the printer vendor has custom sdk which you may leverage and then track this.

just out of the box from windows i dont think this will be easy to setup.

but you can grab the printer config info from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa394364 win32_printerconfiguration class

the issue is tracking 1 particular print job and that doesnt have a color attrib.

may be there is some other way , lets see if someone else has any thoughts on this.

  • thanks for your thoughts, unfortunalty we have many different types of printers (sigh) so it's makes the vendor software option ratther complex..

I have noticed that there are 3rd party options out there so it must be possible to do, but this is perhaps done with some form of port monitoring to interrogate the network traffic of the print job itself....

But, I'm cheap and I don't want to have to pay and I'm having far to much fun trying to write something anyway.
