Hyper-V 2012 R2 virtual Fiber HBA for Linux Gues OS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Can any one confirm if the combination of "Hyper-V 2012 R2 + virtual Fiber HBA + RHEL guest OS VM" are supported by Microsoft. We have assign virtual Fiber HBA on Linux guest OS but unable to see the WWPN number at the OS layer. Even if we assign the LUN based on the WWPN number what we see on the Hyper-V VM console, will it work ?

  • According to https://technet.microsoft.com/windows-server-docs/compute/hyper-v/supported-centos-and-red-hat-enterprise-linux-virtual-machines-on-hyper-v?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 vHBA is supported in RHEL.

There are two sets of WWNs assigned to each VM.  Only one set is active at a time.  During a live migration, the second set is used on the target to establish connectivity to the LUN, and then when live migration completes, it continues using the second set of WWNs.  So as a machine live migrates back and forth, the set of WWNs, A or B, is alternated.  Both sets of WWNs must be zoned and masked correctly.

  • Thanks Tim,

I have gone through it. actually, before assigning the LUN to the Linux guest OS, we are trying to find the active WWPN number on the Linux OS but unable to find it. Any thought on this ?

  • "we are trying to find the active WWPN number on the Linux OS"

This is not a Linux OS forum.  It is a Hyper-V forum.  To find out such information from within the Linux OS, ask in a Linux forum.

  • We've added additional support for extracting SCSI WWN information from devices with the latest release of LIS as well as upstream code. You may want to give it a try and see if it gives you the information you need.

  • Thanks Josh,

Problem got resolved after correctly mapping the storage group on storage.

  • To find out WWPN in a Linux virtual machine, run the command:

    # cat /sys/class/fc_host/host?/port_name
