Cannot create NAL path for the distribution point

    Question

  • Hi Guys

I am struggling from quite long with NAL error on one of our secondary site (secsite1). I am not able to distribute package. Site status shows as below

SMS Distribution Manager failed to initialize the network abstraction layer (NAL).

I checked sitecomp.log file on secondary site. Its output is as below

  • \\secsite1\packages$\, no connection account is available  --> Did you check if your Site Server has Local Admin rights on the DP Server?

  • Thanks Peter

I have checked SMS_SitetoSiteConnection_XXX, SMS_SiteSystemToSiteServerConnection_XXX and all sharing and security permission is exactly same as other working sites.

Also,Members of SMS_SitetoSiteConnection_XXX includes SCCM ALL Site Server group which include s Primary and Secondary Servers.

DP is on the same server as MP and it is Domain controller and  Packages$ share which is DP Permission is set Everyone to Full control.

***Sorry, i didnt get it when you say to check if Site Server has Local Admin rights on the DP Server. What actions i need to perform to check this?

    Thanks & Regards

  • But besides adding the computeraccount to those groups it also has to be Local Admin on the server with the DP. In your case it would mean Domain Admin because your DP is on a DC. See also: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680604.aspx

  • Hi Peter

Yupp Peter all Accounts are Domain Admin but still not working

I am getting this wierd error in site status

    >>SMS Distribution Manager failed to initialize the network abstraction layer (NAL).

Rightly noted by Torsten in his previous post

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrswdist/thread/82edd49f-07d4-4075-a8a2-bd4da5dc6b84

Why does the primary site server need permissions on the DP of a secondary site? Lacking permissions would most likely result in error 5 / access denied, but not the error "Cannot create NAL path for the distribution point"

It is just happening with one site.

    Hi Guys...Any more ideas????

Thanks in advance for your help

  • Yes, but in that post the log shows that it can use the machine account. With you it already shows: \\secsite1\packages$\, no connection account is available...

Besides this did you check DNS (both ways)?

  • Are there any errors in hman.log on either the Primary or Secondary? Possibly it could be a key exchange issue which would be relatively easy to fix with the preinst.exe cmd line tool.
