Colocation not working? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having an issue with Colocation being enable but not actually colocating the protection group onto a single tape.

    Protection Groups:

    Protection Group 1
    Short Term Protection: None
    Long Term Protection: Tape
    Backup daily, three week retention.
    Backup monthly, three month retention.
    Backup yearly, three year retention.

    Protection Group 2
    Short Term Protection: Disk
    Long Term Protection: Tape
    Backup daily, three week retention.
    Backup monthly, three month retention.
    Backup yearly, three year retention.

With Co-Location enabled, the daily backups do not colocate. They will backup to each to their own respective tape until it hits the tapeexpireratio or runs out of room and spans onto another tape. Is this because of the Monthly/Yearly that are also configured to that protection group? Or something else?

My main goal in the end is this:

Each daily backup of each protection group is on its own tape. So in essence, we have a tape for each day of the week. This way, when we go to recover something, we just grab that days tape instead of the entire set. This is how we had it setup in Backup Exec and would like to continue on this method. I will have to modify the TapeWritePeriodRatio to achieve this.

  • Hi,

For co-location to work, both PG's need to have the exact same recovery goals.

I see that Protection Group OPCGC Bare Metal Recovery has a single goal.
I see that Protection Group OPCGC File Server Protection Group has three goals.    1 does not equal 3

  • Hi,

Based on your above stated configuration, the PG's should co-locate. Please visit this forum post and run the DPM powershell script it provides to see if co-location is allowed for the PG's in question.

Also, what kind of library do you have, does it have more than one tape drive, and are the backup times for the daily backups set for the same time in each PG ?

I notice I don't have at the bottom any line items that detail what protection groups can be colocated, not even the header?

We have a HP 1x8 G2 AUTOLDR that can hold 8x tapes (4x per side).

Protection Group 1 (OPCGC File Server Protection Group): 4am daily
Protection Group 2 (OPCGC Bare Metal Protection Group): 8pm D2D daily / 11pm D2T daily

  • Ahh my mistake. I assumed (ya I know) that since the protection goal for the daily backups were the same, they could be colocated on a single tape between protection groups. I didn't realize that every aspect of the protection group had to be identical.

I guess as a work around, I can enable the PG2 to have the same day/month/year goals even though I don't need that data stored for that long. At least this is until DPM2012 comes out where I can create custom colocated protection groups.

Question: The PG2 does a D2D before it does a D2T. Will that still allow me to colocate with PG1 since it doesn't have a D2D only D2T? I guess I can enable the extra pg goals and rerun that script to see what its results say for confirmation.

  • Hi,

DPM 2012 has been out for a couple months now, it's part of System Center suite and no longer a standalone product.

Yes, All Long term recovery gouls must match, and it does not matter if you are doing D2D2T or just long term D2T - if the goals match, we should be able to co-locate.   yes, the script should tell you the expected results.

  • Good to know since our D2D is a Short Term Goal.

Our DPM2010 was purchased as part of SCE2010 (buy SCE get DPM free more or less). Since it is now part of the SC suite, are we able to get 2012 since we have Software Assurance on our SCE/DPM purchase? Maybe not the right place to ask, and can send off email to our CDW rep, but figured I would ask :)
