Blank Blue Window in Office Communicator 2007 R2 RRS feed

  • This is a follow-up to http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/ocsclients/thread/eca9fd44-4541-4eb8-8796-d722ba283cfb which was marked answered without being fixed.

    "Got a weird issue after I've upgraded my Office Communicator 2007 R2 July 2009 Update (3.5.6907.37) to October 2009 Update (3.5.6907.56).
    When I open Communicator, a blank blue window appears. It can be closed by pressing Alt-F4 & ending Communicator.exe in TaskBar. "

    This issue has started popping up everywhere now in my organization. On Windows XP clients.   Can Microsoft please confirm this bug and fix it?

  • Is this the web page it tries to launch upon first install?  It takes you to a flash intro extolling the virtues of OCS and how great it is.....


    It normally opens an IE page, then tries to launch another window from there, but the pop-up blocker usually blocks it so you're sat there with a blank screen.

  • http://dump.no/files/dac62ada9b90/communicator_bug.jpg  have a screenshot of the issue. the blue window was first covering the whole window. but then it was moved by the user to the right as you can see. the blue window can be closed by alt-f4, but there is no close button (X) on it.

    The white area is just me censoring the icons at her desktop.

  • hmmm....no sorry doesn't look like the IE window i mentioned earlier.  it certainly doesn't look very happy though.

  • Same problem here: after having installed kb972884 ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/972884 ), the Windows XP machines of a customer started to display the dreaded  balnk blue window.

    I can confirm that is not a IE window.

    No problems with Vista and 7 clients so far; uninstalling the update fixes the problem.

  • I got that blue window 1st time today. And I found out the class of the window (with microsoft spy++). The class is OCTaskbarMapperWindow. And it is within the same process with the communicator.exe. 

    It has not appeared on the corporate network, but when I did not have the network at first, and I did an attempt to sign again (after logging in the network), it did appear.. (I was starting outlook at the same time)

  • I am experiencing this issue at my firm also.  I am opening a ticket with MS Support to see if there is a hotfix available.  We are Windows XP SP3 across the board and have seen about 10 instances of this throughout the firm.  Will post my results if I get any help from Support.

  • Joshua do you have an update on this? I received my first "blue window" in a corporate environment today. Like you, we are XP SP3 across the board with latest MS updates.

  • Hi Mike -

       I do not have a solution to this yet.  I can confirm that we are experiencing the issue (intermittently) with the January update to Communicator client (3.5.6907.83).  I opened a ticket with MS for two issues around the MOC client and had to choose which issue to address as there is a one issue per ticket policy.  This issue had less impact than our addressbook issue... I did give a heads up to the support engineer and pointed him to this thread.  We have not been motivated to open an official ticket yet as this issue has not been generating support calls.  We are also prepping for an upgrade to Win 7, further decreasing the priority of this.  My user base is 1,700 and we have 8-9 support calls about the issue.  It is either not occurring that much or is not bothersome enough to motivate our users to contact support.

    If I do pursue another ticket with MS to get this addressed, I will post results.  There are higher priority tasks right now and no plan to pursue this in the near future.

    Thanks for the update. I to will post here if we see a need to open a ticket with MS for the Blue Window issue and get a solution. For now, with no support calls on the issue, I view it as a glitch and will report it to MS through their feedback channels.

  • This bug will be fixed in the upcoming (Apri 2010) cumulative update (#5) - stay tuned, the update is ready and will be published sometime in the next two weeks.

    The article doesn't mention that fix. For the record, the fix was added to CU#5 due to popular demand. It was originally planned for CU#6 :) - this last minute change caused some delay in CU#5 delivery.

  • 978564 still doesn't show up in my WSUS yet :'(

    Benoit, it should eventually show up in there like the other Communicator CU's right?  or is this a special manually-download-only one?

  • Yeah, I went to the link you posted above.  Just found it odd that this one isn't showing up in WSUS yet like all the other Communicator CU's.  I did a search for the KB # in WSUS and it didn't find anything.  wonder why this one isn't showing up.

  • This is normal, updates are in WSUS/Windows Update a couple weeks after they have been posted. So, they should show on the Tuesday next week I think.
