How to secure Office web apps

  • I want to expose my SharePoint documents via office web apps so that folks travelling can view documents on a kiosk or access it if they do not have office installed. However we do not want the user to download the file or copy and paste. We have used citrix in the past and this opens up a session and lets the user access the doc make changes but cannot copy paste etc.

Office web apps does not support IRM and we want to get away from Citrix for cost reasons. What are my options?

    Thanks in Advance

  • Hi

Thank you for using Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.

You can protect Office web apps document from SharePoint site.

How to configure RMS in SharePoint 2010, please refer to the following articles:

    “Integrating RMS and SharePoint”

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards

  • Hi William,

I'm looking in to Office Web Apps for SharePoint 2010 and my main concern is security. If I install Office Web Apps on my WFE servers, are users will have the ability to view these senstitive documents in SkyDrive? How can I prevent users from viewing SharePoint files from SkyDrive or any other environment? What is the best way to allow users to just view/edit files from the browser but not have the ability to copy/paste nor have the ability to save to their PC's, just to SharePoint 2010?

Also, would you recommend to configure IRM/RMS instead of Office Web Apps? If so, could you point me to the right direction?

    Thank you

    Did you intenet to say

You CANT protect Office web apps document from SharePoint site.

Before I posted the question I had already set up IRM and have leveraged it for a while. However thank you for the recap.

It would have been nice if documents with IRM policies around them OPENED up in office web apps. I was also aware that currently this is not possible, but was curious to know if there were others in the same boat and if there was any alternative to this. II also know that an API for office web apps does not exist.
