DPM 2007 and backing up or archiving. RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a scenario where we are running out of space on our shared network drive that is currently being backed up via DPM 2007.  On this shared network drive we have a lot of files that are not used but are needed for archiving purposes.  Is it possible to put those files on tape using DPM 2007, and just store the tape with all those files and if ever needed to just get them from tape later on?  Or is this something that DPM 2007 doesn't do?

    Hi VirtualNAS08,

Yes you can use DPM 2007 for archiving. This would be referred to as long-term protection to tape. Here is a link to Managing Tapes with DPM 2007 on TechNet http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb809076.aspx. It would also be good for you to understand more about the retention range in DPM. The retention range is how long DPM will keep a recovery point. Here is a link for that on TechNet as well: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795852.aspx .

  • Thanks Buchatech.  One other follow up question.  Is it possible to archive the data to a specific tape only?  Or does DPM2007 randomly choose any tape available or marked as free?

  • Could I do the following:

Create a directory and move all the files that we want to delete from the SAN to this directory.  Create a protection group with long-term protection to tape for all those files on that directory.  Run the backup for this protection group, delete all the files in the directory after the backup to tape is completed for this protection group.  Make sure the protection group has a retention range of 7 years.

In the above scenario, if the tape DPM uses to do this backup is only half full, would DPM use the remainder of the tape for other backup purposes or is that tape locked down now for 7 years?

  • Hi VirtualNAS08,

You can do that. In regards to the remainder of the tape being used from my understanding it does not sound like it will use the free space. It looks like this is because it is long term protection to tape.
