  • Question

  • I was wondering if it is possible to perform an in-place upgrade for DA 2012R2 server to 2016.

  • if DirectAccess is deployed with windows server 2012 R2, it is possible to perform an in-place upgrade. However, this is not recommended. A safer way is create a parallel deployment DA 2016 then migrate users to new infrastructure.

  • I've never seen anyone try it because in-place upgrades of a DirectAccess server are not supported by Microsoft. I would stay away from this. Much cleaner to bring up a 2016 in parallel (using its own IPs, DNS names, AD group, everything), get DA fully running on it, and then migrate users from the old to the new by simply moving their computer accounts from the old group to the new group. That "live migration" is something I've done countless times and it works great. Even remote users connected via DirectAccess swing over successfully in this scenario.
