Infinite Startup Repair Cycle RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our windows 7 desktop was recently shutdown by switching the power on the power strip the system was plugged into. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but as the title suggests something became corrupt within the system. The startup repair is unable to fix the issue and any attempts to run the SFC tool via the command prompt repair option fails due to a pending System Repair. This is extremely frustrating because the system cannot boot to safe mode or anything but the startup repair the detailed report is below.

    Problem Event name: StartupRepairOffline
    Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 03: unknown
    Problem Signature 04: 21200656
    Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover

    Problem Signature 07: NoRootCause
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033
The computer is connected to the internet via wireless, as a note. The computer's OS is Win 7 Enterprise x64. With all updates turned on. If you need any more information please let me know and I will be glad to give it. I do have access to the CD but as of now I doubt its startup repair will be any more successful.

  • I had already rebuild the BCD before This latest problem. When they system booted it said that the file C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe was missing or corrupt so i booted into the CD and tried sfc /scannfile=c:\windows\system32\ntoskrn.exe /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

I had to have the offbootdir and offwindir or it told me a there was pending System Repair and it couldn't do anything. but the scan just reported that it found a problem but could not fix the problem. I copied the kernel from my computer running the Widows 7 Enterprise x64 and replaced the corrupt one. Rebooted and viola it worked. thank you I don't know if the toying with the bcd caused it to finally error and show the real problem or if the SFC did. But it works now.

    Endless thanks for your time.

  • Hi,

Check this KB article which probably applies even if seemingly different in scope.

After you install a device or update a driver for a device, Windows Vista or Windows 7
    may not start

References to Vista also apply to Windows 7.

This is a serious error and "may" not be repairable without professional tech support from
a real computer shop (not leeks and peeks at a BestBuy or other BigBox Stores) or your
    System maker's Support.

Go into Setup/Settings (BIOS/CMOS) often F2 as you boot so watch screen as you startup.
Set the boot order to CD/DVD to use Windows 7 disks. Remember to set back when done.

With a Windows 7 or Repair disk try Startup Repair - (the possible fixes are same as these though
    the titles are named differently.)

Here are the troubleshooting methods to try to fix the issue :

Try Startup Repair - (If at ANY point you gain some but not full access to Windows come
back and try Startup Repair again.)

  • Currently I am running the SFC tool the proper syntax to get the SFC  to scan windows Directory is

    sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows

    using just the plain

    sfc /scannow

attempts to scan the X dir I believe, as I mentioned above runing just scannow reported that I need to reboot to run the tool as a System Repair was waiting to be ran. As of writing this I am waiting for the System Scan to complete, While waiting I have rebuild the BCD to see if that helps.

  • The results was it found errors but could not fix them my major concern was the line in the log file that looked like

    CBS          Failed to load SxsStore.dll [HRESULT = 0x800700e - ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND]

there are several errors/warnings that occur afterwards, below I have the whole log file from the SFC results. Since windows saved it to the X:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log it only contains this scan :D. I will continue trying. Note upon doing these steops above. the system couldn't find a system critical file and asked me to boot into the CD, and run a repair I am trying that now I will post later with the results of this endeavor..

  • Hi,

Nothing there that helps lead to a solution.

Did you run StartUp Repair from a Repair Disk? Have you run CheckDisk
(chkdsk /f /r ) and checked the drive with the manufacturer's utility?

    ====================

If needed after the above from the Command Prompt of a boot disk.

Did you try using bootrec and easybcd to see if you can get the system to boot properly?

    bootrec /fixmbr

    bootrec /fixboot

    bootrec /scanos

    bootrec /rebuildbcd

it that seems to work run StartUp Repair TWICE - once then reboot and run again.

if no luck try using EasyBCD and afterwards run StartUp Repair Twice.

    Hope this helps.
