SBS 2011 STD - Remote Web Access - There was a problem loading a gadget for Shared Folders

    Question

  • We have installed two servers in the last two weeks, and both server has the same problem. It looks like the problem appear after some Microsoft updates from last update, becouse when we installed the first server and found the problem, it worked on the second server.

Does anyone have a resolution to this problem, og have any information to open the Shared Folder page.

When i try to use Shared Folder menu link, i get this message "There is a problem with this Web page. Please contact the person who manages the server."

  • In most cases, this is due to missing NTFS permission on one of the shared folders.

Can you open Shared Folders page with Administrator's login?

Alo, if you look at remoteaccess.log, you will get to see which folder is the culprit here.

You can share the log file at blrforum at microsoft .com and I'll update.

  • Hi Holtiz, is this a new installation? If you migrate from SBS2008, you can check the following article first:

  • None of the servers was migrated. Clean install, and both servers have been installed the last two weeks, with every Microsoft patch without Sharepoint 2010 Foundation SP1.

I have also tried to change user roles, test externally and local, but none of this works.

I have listed the last updates on one of these servers.

  • I am also having the same issue, and my server was a SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 migration. I have NTFS and Shares permissions set to Everyone/FC for troubleshooting, but it did not resolve the problem. I was not able to find a remoteaccess.log file. Thanks.

  • Any luck on this. Here is my post on Experts Exchange.

I am also having the same issue after a SBS 2003 to SBS 2007 migration. I have appied the User Role fix, but no luck. The folders were working Day 1 of the migration and quit on Day2. Everyone has Full Control NTFS and Share permissions to the shares. This is only until I get the issue resolved. I believe a Microsoft Update broke the connection. I just don't know which one yet. I am seeing more IT pros posting the same issue. I am going to open a ticket with MS tomorrow.

  • I will try to find/look at this file tomorrow, on one of my customers server.

    - This problem is on every user, included the administrator account. (Same problem on both servers)

    - It looks like a problem with user right in IIS and the Shared Folder page, or something like that.

    - Why should Shared Folder page be corrupt/faulty when you share a folder with different user rights?

  • Problem solved.... Thanks to Ketan Thakkar and remoteaccess.log

Problem was related to share permissions on some folders.

I had three folders made by an LOB application called Visma Global, and they was called BankX, BankXData and GlobalSetup. None of these folders had share permissions assigned to any users. It was not possible to set share permissions in SBS Console, and it crashed every time. I had to set it manually to everyone on these folders. Then i was able to set permissions i SBS Console. I checked remoteaccess.log file several times, and found another folder share called GlobalSetup.

    Easiest way to chech this.

    1. SBS Console - Shared Folders and websites - Shared Folders

    2. Check every shared folder and press Change Folder Permissions

    3. If there is no users or group assigned to this share. Try to add one.... if it crash, do it manually by pressing Browse this folder and add users or groups on this folder.

When i closed Internet Explorer and logged on to Remote Web Access, it worked as normal again!

  • Hi,

Thank you for sharing and good to know you fixed it.

Can you please share remoteaccess.log if you can to the email address? I'd like to investigate further and indentify underlying issue.

  • Glad you got it working. Where is the file, remoteaccess.log, located? My searches are not finding the file. Thanks.
    Wednesday, July 13, 2011 3:35 PM
  • OK. I found the file, and I am pasting the log of a standard user logging in to RWA. All of my shares have Everyone/FC permissions except the Accounting. Obviously, I do not want to share that folder with Everyone. I do see a reference about the Accounting share in the log. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • I found the problem. I had an Accounting Security Group that had members, and an Accounting DL that didn't have any members, and both groups were assigned permissions to the share. I remove the Account DL permission from the Accounting share and Voila! All is good again.

  • What email adresse should I send the remoteaccess.log to?

  • It was the same problem on the other server also, with Visma Global LOB application shares.

I have sent an request to the company which installed the application, and they will send an request to Visma to fix this problem. Same problem with share permissions follows the installation procedure, and are not a share made by the technician.

All three catalogs dosn't need more than read permissions, and i have changed the share to domain users and domain admins.

  • Hi,

Email is blrforum-@-microsoft-com (please remove '-' while sending)

However I've got the log file from Kenneth's post.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Holtiz,

I have been investigating and working on various repro scenarios. I'd request you to send me the remoteaccess.log file if you can to the email address above.

The exception in the above log file (Kenneth) looks very odd:

    An exception of type 'Type: System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement.MultipleMatchesException, System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' has occurred.
    Timestamp: 07/13/2011 10:45:34
Message: Multiple principals contain a matching Identity.

This means there are 2 groups found having same name, and its something that you can never do manually. As Kenneth also mentioned, 2 groups with the same name "Accounting" one security and one Distribution group (which is odd) as well both were assigned to the share's DACL permission (which is odd as Distribution groups are not security aware.)

    Thanks.

  • This is just a FYI.

We had this problem (gadget not loading) as well as another problem (not all folders showing). The gadget not loading was indeed caused by a share not having permissions (at the share level thus). Some of the folders not showing was caused by permissions at the NTFS level.

I'm kind of a security minimalist. Since our E:\ disk only contained shares (and the WSUS folder) I had granted only System & Domainadministrators Full Access at the root level (and no other rights whatsoever). This hasn't caused issues with WSUS, nor with the shares themselves, only for the RWA site. Besides being good security practice (IMHO :)) it makes creating a lot of shares easier (we have a lot of them), because I have no permissions to remove after disabling inheritance on the folder, saving time and leaving less room for error.

    So basically we have:

E:\ (only system & domainadministrators Full Control)
E:\Share1 inherit ^ (from initial creation, inheritance is turned off now) + group share1 modify at ntfs + everyone full at share level
E:\Share2 inherit ^ (from initial creation, inheritance is turned off now) + group share2 modify at ntfs + everyone full at share level
And another couple of these +
E:\WSUS (not shared so only inherit ^)

We thus didn't see share1, share2, etc. Just added everyone on the root (E:\) with read permissions, this solved it. Didn't see other people with this issue in my search (it wasn't very extensive tho'), so I figured I'd add it here. WSUS folder still had inheritance on, so it got Everyone read perms too now, but that's no biggy, not shared anyways and users aren't able to logon to the server itself anyways.

  • Logging on as the ADMINISTRATOR user gives the same problem... Not a permission problem.

I cannot find anything called "remoteaccess.log" on the server, please clarify how to find this.

  • Ketan, just an FYI, the message above from: Holtiz fixed my problem !!!!!

I had 2 shared folders that had no one listed in the standard SBS Console, added user to those 2 shares and EVERYTHING WORKING...   I AM SOOOOOOO HAPPY

  • Thanks for the update! Glad to know you fixed it.

Did you also have those shares created by some program?

SBS code will handle a shared folder correctly if it has no body is listed under Sharing permissions on a manually created shared folder.

  • I had a similar issue, even not displaying the home page of the RWA...

I could use the Email and could open Shared Folders, but the Shared Folders would only display a couple of shares, and going into these would give me the same error message.

I resolved it by simply going into the C:\program files\windows small business server\data where I could not retrieve the folder RemoteAccessProfiles.

By creating this one, all issues were resolved.

Just wanted to let you know, if anyone looks for a similar issue...
