Upgrade SBS 2003 to Server 2012 Essentials -- not migrating to new hardware RRS feed

  • Question

  • We would like to upgrade our server from SBS 2003 to Server 2012 Essentials in the immediate future. Our hardware is recent, i.e., surpasses minimum requirements, but the company that originally set it up put SBS 2003 on it, so the migration documentation from old hardware to new hardware (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200112.aspx) doesn't completely apply.

Would it be possible to in-place upgrade 2003 to an SBS 2011 trial and then upgrade the 2011 trial to 2012 Essentials? We're trying to do this all in-place, since we don't have access to any other servers. There are many backups in case something goes wrong.

Any alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello,

SBS is always special and i am not sure if a direct upgrade path exists, so please ask the SBS experts in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/smallbusinessserver/threads

  • It's not possible to do this because SBS 2003 is 32-bit and Server 2012 Essentials is 64-bit.  You MUST migrate, but you can certainly do that by virtualizing your current SBS 2003 and then installing Server 2012 Essentials in Migration mode.
