Quetion regarding installing VSS Writer RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have DPM 2010 setup and running. Originally we had it using our Dell Equallogic for performing backups to disk. We had about 15TB of data backed up to it. Now we installed a tape library and a Overland SnapSAN to be used instead of the Dell SAN. Our method is to perform backups to the SnapSAN for short-term recovery (14 days) and long-term recovery to tape. Overland's website shows that is has a VSS writer to install for the SnapSAN unit. Is this required to install on our DPM server since we are just backing up to disk (short-term)? The server is attached to the Overland tape library and SnapSan via SAS cable.

Thx in advance for any help given.

  • Hi tornadomoore03,

It sounds like your vendor has a VSS hardware providor that could be used. Regarding you question about using the SAN for the DPM diskpool it will work just fine.

You'll use the VSS hardware providor if you for example store your Hyper-V CSV volume on the SAN and want's it to manage the snapshot process of the virtual machines. This will offload your virtual enviroment and not put the CSV volume in a redirected state cuasing overhead.
