Where do I find updates and patches for DPM 2010? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Are they done by Windows Update or do you have to download them from the Microsoft Download center? I haven't been able to find anything online about where to get them or if there are any out there... Anyone know?

DPM 2010 seems to be a bit unstable for me running in a basic environment... I just wanted to find out if there are any patches/updates avaialable.

  • I don’t believe we have any updates or patches for DPM 2010. I have created a list here:

    http://portal.sivarajan.com/2010/06/dpm-version-and-service-pack.html

DPM updates are not available through windows updates.

Please provide more information about the issues.

  • Hi Santhosh,

I have a couple of issues with DPM 2010 and Hyper v R2.

    1. Creating a protection group for Hyper V cluster is extremely slow in identifying Virtual Machine Child Protection Resources

    • I run a 9 physical node cluster (2008 R2 Data Centre CORE) with about 80 VMs
    •  It takes about 30 minutes to bring up Child Protection Resources for one machine and about 3 hours to populate the majority of the VM list, with some timing out / not returning the Hyper V / Child Protection details

    2. DPM Agent on the Physical nodes stops communicating with the DPM server after about 12 hours or when brough in and out of Maintenance mode having to re re-run the setDPMServer command in order for the DPM server to be able to refresh the host information.

This is quite frustrating, especially when trying to add new VMs to Child Protection and also having to re register the DPM server on a daily basis. Do you have and suggestions for rectifying these problems?

  • Hi,

For item 1.  You can enable hyper-V cache: see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff634200.aspx

    Caching

When you are protecting a large number (over 200 virtual machines) of virtual machines using cluster shared volumes (CSV), it may take a long time (>15 min) to populate the inquiry screen in the Create New Protection Group Wizard. You can avoid this by enabling caching on the primary DPM server. After you enable caching, when you expand the data source on the inquiry screen, DPM will refresh the resource groups under that node, but the virtual machines under each resource group will be populated from the cache. The default time-out for the cache is 48 hours. You can change this by editing the registry.

To enable caching, create a new registry key called CacheInquiryResults at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration. Under this key, create the DWORD InquiryResultsTimeoutInterval.

After you create the registry key, you will see the Clear Cache button on the inquiry page of the Create New Protection Group Wizard. Click this button when you want to force DPM to refresh the list of virtual machines.

For Item 2. Can you supply for information on exactly what steps you do cause this problem, does this occur 100% of the time.

    <snip>
DPM Agent on the Physical nodes stops communicating with the DPM server when brough in and out of Maintenance mode having to re re-run the setDPMServer command in order for the DPM server to be able to refresh the host information.
    >snip<

DPM agent communications rely on DCOM, If DCOM settings are being altered somehow, we need to figure out why and fix that.
