Unicast vs Multicast OS Deployment Speeds RRS feed

  • Question

  • We need to deploy multiple desktops and laptops with a Windows 10 image simultaneously.

I noticed multicast is much slower on the Hyper-V MDT/WDS server than unicast. Is 2500-5000 KBps slow for multicast on a gigabit network?

It takes well over an hour to deploy a large WIM file via multicast that only takes about 15 minutes via unicast.

What can we do to ensure that multicasting speeds are a fast as possible?

If after making all the possible tweaks to increase multicast speeds, if it's still much slower, at what point is multicast still a better choice?

We have imaged 5 devices simultaneously via unicast as didn't notice much slowdown.

So, what about imaging 50 or 100 devices at a time?  I'm not sure multicast is worth the effort if it takes 4 or 5 times longer to deploy the OS via multicast vs unicast. We might be able to deploy groups of 25 devices via unicast in series in less time vs 1 large, but super-slow 50-100 device multicast group.
