  • Question

  • Well heres my problem. I can be on my computer for hours at a time gaming/working and whatnot, but when I leave it for more than an hour or so idle it freezes and tries to shut down, I turned off the W7 option to automatically restart when hanging. Its not a BSOD it's just a black screen. I have checked the error logs and it says...

All of this happens within 6 seconds of each other and then the screen just goes black. Any ideas?? I am at a loss, I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox because I thought a plugin was causing it and it seemed to get better but no luck. I have checked and its not the sleep state causing it to do this, at least I don't think it is. Any help would be really appreciated.

  •  So its been caused by the graphics card? Why doesn't it crash when I am playing then...weird. Thanks for your help mate, ill monitor it for a few days and see if it crashes again, I'm on 11.2 now with, as reported by the program, a clean install. Hopefully this fixes it.
if was caused by the Catalyst 10.12 DRIVER. The 11.1 or 11.2 fix those crashes.

  • ug Check 0x3B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

This indicates that an exception happened while executing a routine that transitions from non-privileged code to privileged code.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff558949%28VS.85%29.aspx

    Cause

This error has been linked to excessive paged pool usage and may occur due to user-mode graphics drivers crossing over and passing bad data to the kernel code.

To see the cause I have to take a look at the dumps with the Debugging Tools for Windows.

Please start the Windows Explorer and go to the folder C:\Windows\Minidump. Next, copy the dmp files to your desktop, zip all dmp into 1 zip file and upload the zip file to your public Skydrive [1] folder and post a link here.

In the meantime try to install a newer graphic card driver.

  • Hey, thanks for the quick help. I'm downloading a new graphics driver now, latest one from the website anyway. I think I uploaded the skydrive thing right so here is the link, hope it works and thanks again for the help!

  • Also I just installed the latest driver from the AMD website, it completed but said it had errors, I checked the log and nothing looked serious...?

  • which error message do you get? Use the snipping tool to provide a picture. Also try to install the driver with the help of the device manager.

all crashes are caused by the Catalyst 10.12:

        Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\atikmdag.sys
        Image name: atikmdag.sys
        Timestamp:        Fri Nov 26 03:46:44 2010

which often causes the 0x3B issue.
