Source of profile photos in Microsoft Authenticator App? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I understand M365 and Azure Active Directory (AAD) store photos in several different places (and at different resolutions), such as:

    • AAD profile
    • Exchange mailbox / profile
    • Delve
    • SharePoint

There are also many services that display the photos, such as:

    • AAD blade on Azure Portal
    • O365 Account menu (upper-right corner)
    • Windows 10 Login
    • Microsoft Edge profile sync
    • Teams
    • Skype
    • Sharepoint
    • Delve
    • Authenticator App

Question: What is the source of the profile photo as used in the Authenticator mobile app?

Also, what license(s) are required to store and access that photo?

Why I am asking: My main work account and my personal Microsoft account both show photos, but other domain accounts only show the "hanging badge" generic profile account icon.

Unrelated but also mysterious: some accounts by default are named (the name the user can edit in the app) with the domain name of the tenant, while others are named "Azure AD". If anyone knows the answer to this bonus question, please share!
