SMB in Server 2012 RRS feed

  • In the article "Features Removed or Deprecated in Windows Server 2012" (
    it says:

    Server Message Block
SMB.sys has been removed. The operating system now uses the Winsock Kernel (WSK) to provide the same functionality.

However. the articel "New SMB 3.0 features in the Windows Server 2012 file server" ( talks about new features of SMB under Server 2012.

This is a little confusing for me.

Microsoft had changed internal design model (moved away from a mini-redirector, monolithic redirector etc) and implemented the same functionality as a part of the other component. Preserving (and expanding) public API. Normal thing in engineering practice (think about single clutch replaced with a dual clutch transmission in the decent and recent BMW M3 models). No need to worry :)
