Infected laptop running Windows Vista - please help!!

Question
-
We bought a laptop preloaded with Vista (we were not given a Vista OS CD with it ) but didn't do a image backup. We also purchased a copy of Norton Antivirus. The anti-virus license expired about a month ago and we never got around to renewing it. I've now downloaded AVG anti-virus freeware but find that the laptop is extremely slow and is literally crawling.
1. Seeking pointers on how to clean the laptop or have the OS reinstalled ( i can backup the data myself) without incurring cost on additional Vista or Anti-virus license.
2. Also looking for good anti-virus (freeware) recommendations? as we have 4 laptops at home (purely for home use by all the members of the family) and it is becoming extremely expensive to buy multilple licenses of anti-virus every year.

For your AV, download Microsoft Security Essentials here http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Supplement it with MBAM, the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from http://www.malwarebytes.org

Hi,
We can't reinstall Windows Vista without the installation CD.
