Distribution point question RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

My setup is that I have one primary site with all roles on the one server.

There are a couple of locations where i would now like to create additional standard distribution points on regular file/print Windows 2003 servers. I would like the DP's to be BITS enabled.

My first question is will these servers need IIS installed for BITS to work or indeed for it to work at all?

My second question is when I protect the DP's with the IP range for their associated sites, will this ensure the clients use these new standard DP's and not the original standard DP's as in my deployment package i will have the original plus the 2 new DP's listed.

  • Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

I assume if i do not wish to use BITS, i wouldnt then need to install IIS or webdav on the DP?

  • Yes. IIS is not needed if you do not want to use BITS.

  • Just to make sure there's no confusion, standards DPs do not use BITS to acquire content; they only use BITS to make content available to clients. standard DPs always use SMB to acquire content.
