Storage planning for client backup using DPM 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

My company is planning to use DPM 2010 for client backup and we plan to backup only users documents folder to disk and from disk to tape. The maximum available space available for each user will be 1 GB. Total number of users are 1000.

The retention period for data is 4 weeks  and we plan to take backup once daily. We want that 1 full backup should be taken every Monday and then for remaining 6  days incremental backup should be taken.Could some body please help me with following:

Storage space needed in this scenario.

    thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

first you need to know that you need to configure 1 recovery point created each day. That won't affect your storage required as the amount of changing data will be the same at the end of the week.

And the maximum recovery points allowed is 64. So you can backup a maximum of 64 days using DPM 2010 (2 months)

    According to this : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399599.aspx

    You'll need :

    Replica Volume : (1000 x 3) / 2 = 1.5 TB

    Recovery Points : (1000 x 64 x 2) / 100 + 1,6 = 1.281 TB

This has been done using the 64 days of retention.
