Activate WES 7 Image RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have downloaded Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack 1 Evaluation Edition ( ), created the bootable USB stick and then built the OS for a small, custom device. During the building process we were prompted for a product key (which we didn't yet have) so we continued to build without one. After the build was complete and we'd spent weeks configuring the OS I figured I'd try and activate the device.

I went to Control Panel and then System and saw the 'X days to activate. Activate Windows no' text which I checked on, only to be presented with a message 'Windows cannot find 'C:\windows\system32\slui.exe'.

Presuming that it's possible for me to get an internet connection on the device, is it possible for me to go online and purchase the necessary keys for activating the device? Or do I need to have an image built with something other than WES7 SP1 Eval?

    Many thanks

  • You will need the real WES7 development tools as the evaluation cannot build a release image. Also, your company will have to sign a Microsoft license agreement to get the run-time key as well. If you are in the USA, you can contact Avnet to get these times software @
