Migration steps from Lync 2013 to skype for Business "Side by Side" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

We are planning to perform a side by side migration from Lync 2013 to Skype for Business (not in-place upgrade). Roles involved are Front-Ends (x2), Edges (x2), Archiving (x1) and monitoring (x1).

I am looking for the steps to perform this migration, but I cannot find detailed steps, all information describes the in-place upgrade.

    Can you share information?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi SKM12.

Unless you have very specific reasons for doing so (zero-downtime, hardware replacement, etc.), I wouldn't recommend doing side-by-side upgrade.

    It is really straight forward.

Install Skype4B topology builder on one of the new servers. Publish the updated topology (from now on you cannot open topology builder on Lync servers). Build and publish your target topology. Install FE and Edge servers, move CMS at the end.

Remember: When you deploy a new server, you must have a new SQL instance, loadbalancer VIP etc.

  • A few questions:

    1. Can Lync 2013 users use Skype for Business Edge server?

    2. Can Skype for Business users use Lync 2013 Edge server?

    3. Can Office Web Apps servers be used at same time by Lync 2013 servers and Skype for Business Servers?

    Thanks
