Standards for using a cascading drop down list or combining data into one

    Question

  • I currently have two(2) cascading dropdown lists whereby selecting items from list-1 filters the items in list-2. Additionally you can make multiple selection where the selections are listed below the dropdown lists. Now our other department wants to combine the two drop downs into one(1) list making the list about 5x as long at least to about 80 records. Also, the SQL database is designed with two normalized tables with the two values.

The other department believes that it will be more intuitive to have only one list and the user be able to make multiple selections based on that list.

What are the standards in this scenario and Even if we stay with the 2 cascading dropdowns is that the best approach. I have scene scenarios were there are << and >> buttons to add/remove data in the selection list, maybe thats over kill?

    Thoughts?
