Sort a group RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using a SharePoint group to populate a Choice column. The dialog for the Choice sorts the group by user account. I would like to sort by Last Name instead. Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Jim,

Do you have any column which includes Last Name ?

If yes go to Settings > View > Modify View

Find Sort by option and then select the column includes Last Name , select ascending or descending order and click on ok

  • Hi,

According to your description, you can consider the following idea:

Create a common single text field for last name, then using a Eventhandler to synchronize last-name from the People and Group field.

In this case, you could sort the single text last name field with OOB UI in SharePoint Designer.

See the similar scenario(a walk around for calculate field) and solution from Paul Galvin: Using "Person or Group" in a calculated column:

    http://paulgalvinsoldblog.wordpress.com/2007/10/06/using-person-or-group-in-a-calculated-column/

You could refer SPListItem Event example in SharePoint 2010: Creating a List Item Event Handler:

  • It looks like this solution involves a custom .NET program, however. Our organization does not support custom programming for SharePoint. Is there a way to create an event handler through the SharePoint GUI?

    Thanks

  • I don't have a column that includes just the Last Name. The column that is bound to the group already is sorted, but it sorts by the ActiveDirectory user account, not last name.

    Thanks
