Why are Project Plan Start & Finish dates different than TimeSheet? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Pardon me if I am a bit of a Project noob, but I am wondering why the dates are different from the Project Plan to the My Timesheet View.

In Project Plan the columns are "Start" and "Finish"
In My Timesheet View the columns are "Start [Assignment]" and "Finish [Assignment]"

Project Plan says 10/31/12 to 12/11/12
My Timesheet View says 9/24/12 to 11/14/12

I may have added hours to the Assignment while testing, does that change the Start [Assignment] Date?  If so, which columns will give me the same "Start" and "Finish" from the Project Plan, regardless of changes made by the Resource?

  • Hi,

apply a usage view in Project client (Task Usage or Resource Usage). Add columns Start and Finish if necessary. There you will see assignment information.

Does this fit with data you are seeing in timesheet?

  • Also, check to see if multiple users have been assigned to task.  The start and finish dates may be those that you entered, versus the dates that the project manager planned.

    Cheers!

  • If you enter Actual Work against an assignment before the scheduled date, you will change the start date of the assignment. If this new date is before the start of the task, you will change the start date. If the new date is before the project start date, you will change that too. If the time sheet updates are accepted into the project you would expect date changes to be applied when you look at the project.

  • the task start date may be different to the assignment start date as Barbara suggested. I would check this and compare the start date for the user in the usage view. That should correspond to the timesheet start date
