Cannot connect to the configuration database after updating SQL SP3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi, We're using WSS 3.0 with SQLExpress 2005. Because Symantec Backup Exec 2010 also install on this server, so I have to update to SQL Service Pack 3. But after updated to sql service pack 3 and installed Backup Exec 2010, I cannot connect to sharepoint. When I access to Central Administration, an error appears: "Cannot connect to the configuration database" I followed this instruction: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823287 but the problem still persists. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thanks

  • Try connecting to SQL Server using SSMS. The SQL Server Error Log should give more details for the possible reasons

I still can connect to SQL Server using SSMS. When I look at Event Viewer, there are a lot of errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3 Search Event Category: Gatherer Event ID: 2424 Description: The update cannot be started because the content sources cannot be accessed. Fix the errors and try the update again. By the way, how to get the SQL Server log. I'm using SQL Express 2005.

  • Hello dkha126,

Inside SSMSEE, after having connected your SQL Server instance, you will see a panel on the left side with a treeview beginning with the name of your SQL Server instance. At the bottom of the treeview, click on Management to develop the node. Click on errorlogs you see the name of the existing errorlogs for the instance. I know that it is possible with SSMSEE 2008 to view an errorlog inside it. I am not sure that you have the same feature available with SQL Server Express 2005. You can always view these errorlogs with notepad and usually they are in the folder Program Files/Microsoft SQL Server/MSSQL.1/MSSQL/Log folder (MSSQL.1 if you have only one instance , if any more other, it can be MSSQL.2 and so on )

Don't hesitate to post again for more help or explanation.

    Have a nice day
