Folder Redirection GPO with different Home-Servers

    Question

  • Hi there

In our Environment we have different Servers for the Home-Profile-Shares.

For Example, if a User is named "Anton", his Homeserver-Path is:

    \\home-a.domain.com\Anton

If a User is named "Peter", his Homeserver is:

    \\home-p.domain.com\Peter

So it's always the first letter of his Username which appears after the "\\home-".

Now I tried to find out how I can arrange this with GPO Folder Redirection (FR) and found this command:

    %username:~0,1%

If you use this, it will show you the first letter of the Username.

So I tried this in the GPO FR Settings:

    \\home-%username:~0,1%.domain.com\%username%\Desktop

    But it doesn't work :-(

    Every help is very appreciated!

  • Hi Bigfr0g,

According your description, I suggest you add these users (the same first letter of username) to a group, for example, add Alias and Anton to group A, add Peter and Pierce to group P.

Please select Advance – Specify locations for various user groups to choose the different target folder location for various security groups when you configure folder redirection.

    Best Regards,

    Jay

  • Is the Home Share already set?

You may be able to use %homeshare%\Desktop in the FR GPO.

Yes the %homeshare% is set, but we can't use this one, because it's not correct. (It points to a DFS)

    Short explanation:

We are a small division of a big company, but not at the Headquarters. We use the AD Services from the HQ (where all the User Accounts are handled), but have our own Homeshares because our Users need more Drivespace (100GB) instead of 2GB like the Users at HQ and we like to handle the Backup for ourselfs.

We can't change the "Home folder" in the AD, because some of the Users work also in the HQ.

This :~ syntax is a feature of the cmd.exe set command, you cannot use
it in FR. What you can use instead: Redirect to
    %homeshare%%homepath%Documents
(in this case, make sure that you configure
    http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#324 to apply without changes,
otherwise changing the home share in AD will not be picked up by FR :-))

That doesn't help... and why should it? ;)

I need a dynamic Folder Redirection Path that connects the User to the correct Server.
