App-V after 4.6 SP1 to SP2 upgrade fails to load apps. Have to reset cache :( RRS feed

  • Question

  • After upgrading an end user computer (Windows 7 32-bit) App-V client from 4.6 SP1 (4.6.1.20870)  to 4.6 SP2 (4.6.2.24020) as part of testing, a users previous cached apps won't load, I have to then perform a cache reset by doing the following:

    sftmime /remove obj:app /global /complete

Reset FileSystem cache, set the following registry value to 0:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\Client\AppFS\State

    Restart PC

We want to deploy this upgrade to all PCs, and due to having hundreds of users that already use many apps (and have them already cached), we ideally don't want to have to force them to download their apps again, some are over a GB and users could be in remote locations with slow links.

There must be an easier way to upgrade without causing upset to the end users?

    Errors:

The Application Virtualization Client could not connect to stream URL 'RTSP://%SFT_SOFTGRIDSERVER%:554/Access97_inc_Addons_5.sft' (rc 19D02E0A-10000002, original rc 19D02E0A-10000002).

The client was unable to connect to an Application Virtualization Server (rc 19D02E0A-10000002)

    The Application Virtualization Client could not launch Microsoft Access 97 8.0.0.5903_2.:tid=1318:usr=...}

  • What's indicated in the App-V client log?

  • Hello,
It seems that the system environment variable %SFT_SOFTGRIDSERVER% is not set

  • Well it is shown successfully within the Publishing Servers section of the App-V GUI and elsewhere in the log , so looks valid, but I didn't want to copy the full log with all personal info.

Reading elsewhere there's recommendations to not use the %SFT_SOFTGRIDSERVER% variable, although we have this setup due to balance Server load between 2 Servers.

What is the best way to configure my setup? We have been using our current setup with the current version build for nearly a year so any update has got to fit well with out current setup for least impact on users.

But it doesn't make sense that a simple reset of cache setting and reboot after the 4.6 SP2 upgrade has taken place allows each app to be re-downloaded and used successfully again, without the reset no App-V apps will start, even rebooting etc many times doesn't make any difference.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

Your packages seem to leverage the environment variable, which is not set according to the log-file. See this article which discusses the topic more in detail.

Is there any reason to not confirm if the variable is set ?
