Excel "View in browser" or "Edit in browser": File Not found RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just finished migration from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010 "attached database", and after configuration done and our intranet portal migrated properly with SSP and Search all working fine.

one of our staff members complain about opening Excel 2010 file in browser from inside document library, that it was showing the error message :

    "File Not Found.
    Correlation ID: 9b438012-94e6-412e-9bb2-2aeb93234471"

so the first thing i have done was to add trusted path from the Excel services to that document library where  the excel file saved, and after check it the same error remains ...

after searching over SP 2010 communities , I found lots of articles taking about "Office Web Apps" and how to browse office 2010 file using it ...

so is it compulsory to have "Office Web Apps" installed and configured  on SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise Edition to browse the office Excel 2010 file from document  library!
also I don't have office excel 2010 application installed on the application server, is it required?!

I appreciate if you can help find solution to guide me through this issue!

  • Hi,

It’s not compulsory to install Office web App to open excel in browser. What’s the size of the Excel file? By default, Excel calculation service cannot open a workbook that larger than 10MB, you can change this when you editing the trusted file location.

And I think you can make use of Correlation ID to get more information about this error. Please check this article for how to use it:

  • Hi Pengyu,

the file size is very normal, less than 1 MB, anyway temporarily i changed the option to view excel files using browser to to be replaced with client side excel application...

i will diagnose more about the correlation id , to find the reason..

    Thanks for you reply.

  • I looked after the Logs files and found the error below..

System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Excel.Server.http:\/\/SharePoint-Dev2:5050, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified....

any Idea why this assembly is not able to loaded inside the SharePoint Webapplication context, even though the excel services service account is having administrative privileges.
