  • This sounds identical to a couple of support issues we've had in the last couple of months.  I believe your issue will be resolved by the upcoming cumulative update for ProClarity 6.3 (6.3.2215).  We should be announcing that release here on the forum in the next two weeks at the most.

If your situation is critical, please open an official support case with Microsoft (call 1.800.Microsoft if you have no other known channel for opening cases) and we can look at getting you the release as soon as possible.  If the issue is resolved as a bug, the case will almost certainly be refunded.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

  • Hello Manal,

I have not seen anything similar, at least going off of recent memory.

"This might indicate that the network is congested. . ." - I wonder if you could try increasing some ASP settings within your IIS metabase / IIS Manager.  There is an ASP script timeout setting within your PAS virtual directory settings.  There is also a setting in the metabase - AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed that you can adjust.  The IIS 6 Resource Kit’s Metabase Explorer is the best tool for making modifications.  Once in the Metabase Explorer, highlight the W3SVC node and you’ll see all of its properties listed along the right side of your screen.  You can directly edit all IIS settings by double-clicking the appropriate row.  Try upping the AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed property from 204800 to 1204800.

I've also done a bit of reading about the error and it looks like there could be a number of contributing factors ranging from DNS forwarding utilizing incorrect IP Addresses, to problematic ISA servers, proxy problems, firewall problems, etc.  Is anything being captured within your IIS log?  (c:\windows\system32\logfiles\w3svc1)  I'd take a look within your Event Logs and IIS log immediately after the error appears again and see what type of responses are coming through.  If you find anything relevant feel free to pass it along and I'll see what I can figure out for you.

Wireshark might be a good trace utility as well, if you're well-versed in reading those.  Smile  Those trace files are very useful in uncovering network bottlenecks.  Last thought is that you might test using the 6.3 version of ProClarity to see if the problem happens there.

    Regards,

    Amanda

  • Thank you Amanda for your reply

I tried the first solution you suggested by increasing AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed, but doesn’t solve the problem.

For your second suggestion, I would be grateful if you can take a look on the logfile.

I think the problem is related to the configuration of the cluster system.

Regarding the last suggestion, I don’t have the 6.3 version of ProClarity, and also we using SQL server 2000 .

    Thank you again

This the lines in the logfile related to our issue

  • Hi Manal,

It appears to me that perhaps you are running into a timeout on either the PAS website or perhaps a firewall appliance in your environment that is blocking the script activity that populates the left pane.  I have had customers that have experienced issues with the left pane related to directory traversal or relative addressing that takes place in the older ProClarity versions where the requests are blocked by a firewall.  I would certainly recommend touching base with your firewall/system administrators to see if they can check their logs for this type of activity to/from this server.

To rule out performance or configuration as being the cause, you might try increasing the asp script timeout setting on the PAS virtual directory options to see if the navigation pane will eventually render.  Also, if you turn off friendly http error messages in the browser options, then reopen the standard client, do you get a different error message than "the page cannot be displayed"?

Please let us know what you find.

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Hi Bob,

Thank you a lot for your reply.

I tried your suggestion regarding the time out on the PAS website, but doesn’t work. Also we tried with the hardware firewall, and there is no error occurred, while we got the following message on ISA server (when we tried to trace the PAS website).

I’ll try to explain the issue again: When we open the view on web professional, we got an error “the page cannot be displayed” with time out error, and when I refresh the page the view appear, but the left pane not appear with timeout error, especially the navigation tab , while the other tabs is some times appeared  and some times not appeared.

I turned off friendly http error messages in the browser options, and I got the same error message "the page cannot be displayed"

    Thank you again.

  • Hello again Manal,

Thanks for the update.  It's hard to speculate exactly what is causing your issue, but I'd be highly interested to know if this issue occurs with ProClarity 6.3.  Any chance you can install the 6.3 version on a test server and test its functionality?

The IIS logs you sent are not very useful unless we know the exact time of the error and the user credentials being used to access the website.  Maybe you could further investigate if you happen to know that information.  Being that this is intermittent though, and that a refresh brings different frames into view, this could possibly be a problem with routing.  What if you run a Traceroute command when the browser initially errors out to trace the route in which the packets are being sent.  I recommend capturing a good tracerout when everything works appropriately and then you can compare the two outputs.  (I agree with you that this may be more of a routing issue rather than an actual timeout or IIS setting.)

    Kind Regards,

    Amanda

  • Manal -

I recall a few years ago running into the firewall blocking on the directory traversal. So have your firewall admin take a look and see if packets are being dropped, and if there is a rule against directory traversal.

This was on a WAN between our site and corporate. And I think it was on their end packets were being dropped.

So it got a bit political.

Having used ProClarity since 6.0, I've found every release and patch has delivered better and more reliable performance. Especially since we are SQL 2005. So if you could test 6.3, and it works, that might be a very good solution.

  • Hi Manal, Greg

I am facing a similar issue with Proclarity 6.3 - Web Professional does not launch intermittently where as standard works always. I face this problem both over the Intranet and through the frewall. I have discovered a strange workaround which always works! This probelm always get resolved when I open the Proclarity Admin Tool and click the Users Tab on the Proclarity server. Appreciate if you could try this out and send your feedback.

    Dear Naresh, Gerg and Amanda

Thank you alot for all of you.

Regarding your suggestion to install Proclarity version 6.3, it is diffcult for now since we don't have this version and to test it on single machine or server it will different than to install it on cluster system, it is hard for now to migrate to version 6.3.

for Naresh suggestion,  I tried it but dosen't work also.

thank you again, and hope we can find a solution ASAP.

    Regards,

    Manal

    Hello,

It would appear there is a timeout on the ISA server.  If you remove that server from the equation, do you still see problems?  That is, if you access the PAS server directly and attempt to take the same steps, do you continue to see a problem?  If not, you should consider looking into timeout settings on the ISA server.

  • Naresh,

It's difficult to understand exactly the issue you are facing.  Can you provide a few more details?  When Web Pro does not launch, what exactly happens?  Do you just get a blank IE window, or do you actually get an error message?  If it's an error message, what's the message?

  • Hi Ben,

The problem i am facing is - Intermittently on launching the Web Pro I get a blank IE window.

The PAS server is in my intranet and have also published it over Internet. I face this problem from my PC in the intranet as well as when I access it over Internet.

The problem gets resolved always when I open the PAS Admin Tool and just click on Users tab.

This method is not a solution or even a work around but I thought this input may provide some insight into the problem. If you need further inputs let me know. Thanks for helping out.

    Naresh

  • This sounds identical to a couple of support issues we've had in the last couple of months.  I believe your issue will be resolved by the upcoming cumulative update for ProClarity 6.3 (6.3.2215).  We should be announcing that release here on the forum in the next two weeks at the most.

If your situation is critical, please open an official support case with Microsoft (call 1.800.Microsoft if you have no other known channel for opening cases) and we can look at getting you the release as soon as possible.  If the issue is resolved as a bug, the case will almost certainly be refunded.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

  • Thanks Ben, The cumulative update has fixed this problem of web prof displaying blank screen intermittently.
