BSOD with Vista and Western Digital on USB RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Western Digital "My Book" external drive on my Vista 32 machine.   I normally have it attached to my machine via a firewire 800 port.   I had to switch it to USB to do an upgrade on the firmware on the drive; I left the drive on the USB.    When idle, my machine goes to Sleep mode.   But, all of a sudden, when I hit a key on my machine or (USB) mouse or (USB) external keyboard, there's a sound (so it noticed me) but then it locks up with a black screen...  Doesn't come out of Sleep mode properly.    After several occasions of having to power down the machine and power up again, I moved the external hard drive back to firewire and the problem disappeared.

Food for thought for those trying to track things down...    I'm willing to work with support professionals to attempt a fix.
