re-installing a copy of <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer has stopped working.  The message is

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

     <Windows root>system32\hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I would be happy to do that, but I don't know how.  Somebody, PLEASE,  HELP!

It seems that when I press any key it just tries to  re-boot and goes back to this screen.  What do I do?

  • Preferred way : you can repair the OS if you have windows XP CD with you.

alternate way : you can enter windows recovery console and replace hal.dll and ntoskrnl.exe from CD to your OS drive. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
