Disappearing names RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have Project 2010 with SP1. From time to time, I find an extraordinary event happening.  I will switch to a new view and none of the names show, and the field width expnads out with all the other fields that were showing also disappear.  To fix this I have to shut down project, restart and reopen the schedule and everything works fine, for a while.  The schedule does not seem to loose any data during this as long as it has been saved.

Any thougths?  Could it be related to the numerous crashes that I get with this version, 2 yesterday and 2-3 the day before.

    Thanks for any pointers.

I have encountered this behavior as well, and like you, the only way I could resolve it was to close the project, exit Microsoft Project 2010, and then restart the software.  I cannot reproduce the circumstances that led up to this behavior, so I have not reported it as a bug.  I know others have experienced this, too, as it has been reported previously in this user forum.  Furthermore, I do not believe this has anything to do with a corrupted project, since I was able to open the project again with no additional problems.  Hope this helps.

  • Hi David,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :-)

Crashes are indicative of corruption.  Firstly, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-)

  • Hi Glen,  I am aware of that suggestion and regularly resave to avoid bloat etc.  Problem is that the problem (both disappearing names and crashing) happens on new schedules, small schedules, old schedules or large schedules.  The only possibly consistency with the crashing is that I have task deadlines which use "paste link" dates from a calculated date on another task.  Both the deadline task and the task with the deadline reside in the same file so it is not the issue of 'flakey' linking between project files which seems to remain an issue.
