Disabling Open In Word Online possible in Sharepoint Document Libraries? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Having problems with users accidentally opening Word docs in Word Online and accidentally finding it reformats things like signature lines with user setup tabs and underlines.

I would really like to either CHANGE the list so that OPEN IN WORD is on TOP and OPEN to WORD ONLINE is below it, or better yet, removed, or set to a condition where it is not accessable. Frankly, for business users, I don't know why they ever would want to open to online since they are using a laptop or other device, and it only serves to confuse them.

To be clear, Word ONLINE is quite different than WORD for display of WORD generated forms.

  • Hi 8string,

Here are the steps to set the default open behavior to open documents in client applications:

    1. Enable the OpenInClient feature for site collections.

    (1) In the SharePoint site collection, choose the Settings icon > Site Settings.

    (2) On the Site Settings page, under Site Collection Administration, choose Site Collection Features.

    (3) On the Features page, for the “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default” feature, choose Activate to enable the OpenInClient feature, documents will open in the client application.

    2. Set the default open behavior for a document library by using the document library settings page.

    (1) On the document library page, choose the Library tab.

    (2) In the Settings group, choose Library Settings.

    (3) On the Document Library Settings page, choose Advanced settings.

    (4) On the Advanced Settings page, in Opening Document in the Browser, select the option “Open in the client application”. Then in this library, the document will open in the corresponding client application if it's available.
