Approvals on Project Server 2013 - An unknown error has occurred RRS feed

  • Question

  • Migrated Project server 2010 to Project server 2013.  All the quick launch pages were working after I completed the migration. Started the process of publishing projects and statusing/timesheets to update project.

Now I see "An Unknown Error has occurred".   Tried all my solutions for Project Server 2010 without success.

    Event log looks clean.

Has anybody seen and resolved this issue?

    Cheers!

  • Its been a while since I have seen it again.  I rebuilt the project server and dropped the database back in.  I haven't seen it since.  Sorry I don't have more information.

  • We are having the same error with an on-premise install of Project Server 2013. This is the error from the ULS logs.

  • Hi Dale,

I wish someone could give us more information...
As my customer has Project On Line (in the cloud)  he has opened a Microsoft Incident (support case), if there is anything new and I will tell you.

  • Hi Dale

Just throwing off idea, please bear with me

it seems there is an interference with your time sheet approvals, typical recommendation is to make database read only before backing up DB for upgrade, if that's not been performed, then chances are some of those approvals might have been in progress or some time sheets, can you try deleting timesheets / removing references of approvals if any and then try again

Let us know if it helps

  • Sunil,

We were not using timesheets in our implementation, however I had created some for testing purposes a few months ago. I deleted all the timesheets in our system and that resolved our issue. Thank you very much for your suggestion.

  • Hi guys,

I am very sorry, I still do not know the cause of the problem and I don't know as I should deal with it...

In my situation, this is not a solution starting from the scratch...or deleting timesheets...( I tried it without success)

Probably the problem is with some corrupt or orphan assignement... and I cannot get it because the project server database is in the cloud.

Regards and have a nice day!

  • I would suggest create a ticket with online support and they should be able to assist, since there are no errors to review it would be easier to work with support to get to the details and get it fixed

  • It seems it ha to do with "Single Entry Mode", try to clear it.

Some submitted timesheets has issues and may display "View can't be displayed" error.

I did not find any fix for this issue, but sometimes it works to delete actuals while "Single Entry Mode" is off and then enter actuals again when "Single Entry Mode" is on.

  • I also have had this problem occur.  I was able to find out a few things about it.  First, I was able to get the Approvals view to show by turning the Single Entry Mode off.  Then I was reviewing the users Approval screen and noticed several line items that had blank project names, but hours for approval.  After checking the timesheets, these turned out to be the total lines at the bottom of the resource's timesheet.  For some reason PWA was adding the total line as a task/timesheet update.  Since the project name is blank, it would cause the view to crash and cause the unknown error.  I am looking into a way clear these lines out, turn back on Single Entry and not have it happen again.  Will keep things posted with results.

  • Same thing happend to my system. I was able to turn off SEM and reject the updates to clear the corrupt entries. Turned SEM back on afterward, and Approval Center works without the error again. I would definitely like to know what causes that issue.
