Show First Line Only - Change default back to unchecked... RRS feed

  • Question

  • In Word 2010 using outline view, a user can check an option to "Show First Line Only".  Apparently, this changes the default for every document ever opened in the future.  It can be turned off for the current editing session, but the default can never be "unchecked" again.

I've searched and the only answers appear to be macros added to the default template, which seems like overkill.

Does anyone know how to set the default for "Show First Line Only" to unchecked?

  • This is easy to reproduce and it’s obviously a bug. Deleting the Data key in the registry, which usually fixes issues such as this one, didn’t help. I haven’t (yet) tried deleting the whole Word key, but it may do the trick.
The only workaround that I can think of is using auto macros, as you’ve already mentioned.

  • OK, I just tried this and deleting the whole Word key does work. It takes some time to reselect all the custom options you’ve lost in the Word Options dialog box, of course.
