Upgrading from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2016 Essentials

Question
-
Hello,
I own a small office with 20 desktop workstations connected to a Windows Server 2008 R2. The server is on a Workgroup instead of a domain and doesn't have active directory running or exchange. We primarily use it as a file server with a couple of programs installed on the server and a SQL database.
We recently purchased Windows Server 2016 Essentials and I was wondering if we upgrade the Server to 2016 Essentials, will we have to re-install some of the programs we currently have installed and setup all the Shares and permissions?
Or should it be pretty straight forward with little to no configuration needed?
Thanks

hi,
1 you can not upgrade from server 2008 r2 to server essentials 2016 directly 。 If you have only one physical server, you need to clean install server essential 2016. The install method can not resrve file share ACL.

2 If you want to use server essentials 2016 more function ,you need to add it to domain.

3 For security reasons, we recommend that you do not install SQL Server on a domain controller
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-server/install/hardware-and-software-requirements-for-installing-sql-server?view=sql-server-20174 how many current memory size on server 2008 r2? server essentials 2016 only support max 64G memory.
