SharePoint Online Peformance Troubleshooting

    Our organization has around 200 users and we use SharePoint Online. Recently, we have been seeing a lot of latency issues across all site collections. We have around 12 site collections and 50GB data. We do not have any large lists. Customizations include a simple master page and some workflows that send email notifications on status change of list columns. The latency issues are not consistent. When they occur, all pages and sites are effected. A newly created site with absolutely no master page or customization is taking around 15s to load. This is definitely not a network issue because the latency is seen from outside the network as well. Also, other Office 365 services work fine, the issue is only with SharePoint. We have tested with AD and cloud users and the behavior is same. I have raised a support request with Microsoft and the ticket is pending since a month and there is absolutely no pointer yet.  Our user base is suffering due to these latency issues. Any pointers on how to troubleshoot this issue?

  • Hi,

    There are three different ways that you can identify that a page on a SharePoint Online site has a performance problem with the customizations.

    1. The F12 tool bar network monitor.

    2. Comparison to a non-customized baseline.

    3. SharePoint Online response header metrics.

    These tools provide useful information about performance issue, which helps you figure out the root cause.

  • Thanks for the links. I have already referred these links and tried all the troubleshooting tips provided.

    Our issue is intermittent and happens like 2 hours a day. When the issue happens, all sites, site collections(customized and uncustomized) , pages are slow. We do not have any content roll ups, large lists, structural navigations, huge videos etc playing on pages. We do not have any custom SharePoint apps as well. Our sites are pretty much out of the box.

    This is not a network issues because the issue occurs outside the network as well. We have run psping, tracetcp, Wireshark etc and there is no network issue. The issue is seen with AD and cloud users id's. The problem is we cannot recreate the situation to troubleshoot. It just happens randomly for a few hours in a day.

    Unfortunately, Microsoft support has just kept our ticket open and say they are working on it since a month. I am not sure what needs to be done in such a scenario. Is anyone aware of an escalation path for the tickets or has any other suggestions?
