What is being collected by MAP? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a client (Bank) that is concerned about what data is being collected by MAP. Is there a document that describes what is being inventoried and will explain that no personal information is being collected in the express DB?

  • MAP itself collects a lot of sensitive information about an environment, but that data is entirely in the control of the end user, none of it is sent outside of the product by MAP. The only way that data is shared with anyone is if the user shares the database, log, or reports with someone else.

That being said, MAP does include the ability to collect telemetry data on how the product is being used, which does not contain any personally identifiable information (PII) and the user is required to explicitly opt-in or opt-out during installation, it is not a default opt-in. It is just data that helps us understand how people use the product, such as what OS is on the machine that has MAP installed? How many times were various reports generated? What language is set in the regional settings? And so on. You can read our privacy statement here:

Ultimately, we don't want the PII, nor do we care about one individual user. What is meaningful to us is how the product is used by the whole community of users. What reports are the most popular? What OS? This kind of information helps us to determine where we should focus our resources for further development based on actual usage data instead of just guessing what people find important.
