  • Where does email go when it is sent to a Universal Distribution group that has no members?

  • Nowhere the categorizer will process it with no members to send it. It's also been refered to as a black hole DL among other names. It does have uses such as if you want to use that email as a no no reply email address or when your application servers send emails out as app1@yourdomain.com internally which doesn't have a mailbox, using empty DLs have prevent NDR loops in certain scenarios.

  • Not if it was incoming from outside the Exchange org.  If it was internal, there could be a copy in the sender's Sent Items if their mail client is configured for that.

  • Thanks for everyone's help and confirmation. We've discovered this address and wondered if email was still getting sent to it. We can send emails to it externally and internally without any notification coming back. At this point we'll delete the Group and create a standard user account and set an Out of Office reply.
