The effect of changing Sharepoint Administrator display name RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I would like to know the effects of changing the display name of SharePoint administrator. our admin is called MOSS Admin and when emails are sent we use this email address and so people receive emails from MOSS Admin so we wanted to change the display name of Moss Admin to show something else and I don't know if this will affect anything like site collection administrator where the display name of the user appears or would it be better to create another user for emails and set this email in the outgoing email settings?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Marwa,

Changing display name should not affect anything as permissions are assigned on the account name. This is an AD account, right? So you will be updating the display name in the Active directory and through the User profile import it will be imported into SharePoint SSP and the time job should then update the display name into your site collection.

If you have a test enviornment I would however recommend you to test it out there before applying in Production.

    Hope this helps!

  • If you have set up profile imports and you are changing the display name in Active Directory then yes, the change will eventually be propagated automatically throughout the farm the next time the import job runs. This will not cause any issue unless you are changing the display name to something like "MOSS Email Account" which would be a confusing name for your administrator account.

If this is the case, then you are correct that a better approach is to use another account for sending emails and configure your outgoing email settings accordingly. I suggest an account that is monitored by a real person in the event someone replies to the email.
