XLS file not open or view in SharePoint RRS feed

  • Hi

    In my sharepoint document library, i have excel files, problem is when i click on xls file it prompt me to option "Find, Save, Cancel", and when i click on xlsx file its open on browser, Does sharepoint support xls file to directory open on browser?

  • Ok, so you're using the Excel Web App? 

    If that's the case, then you can't open .xls files with it. (And SharePoint is still ONLY a storage area.)

  • Do or did you have more than one version of Excel installed on your machine?

    My gut says that the default application for .xls is an older version of Excel, which Windows can't find, so it prompts you.  Perhaps update the default app for .xls to be your latest version of Excel.

  • No i didn't install different version of excel, sharepoint its self can open xlsx file but not xls any idea ?

  • SharePoint doesn't open anything, it just stores it. 

    When you click on a file in SharePoint, Windows looks to the registry to see what the default application is for the file type, and attempts to open that application, with the additional switch of the file to open once the application opens.

    So, again, go ensure/modify the default application for a .xls file.

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. I didn't even install MS Office in my machine.
    2. I am using SharePoint 2010 enterprise version 
    3. Not using office web app.

     

    Problem is that there are two excel files in my document library one file extension .xlsx and second file extension .xls, when i click on .xlsx file its open directory in browser, but when i click on .xls file it prompt me window with three option, "Find, save, Cancel.

    as you said go modify default application for a .xls where should i modify?

  • You must be using some version of Office in order for Excel to open the .xlsx file.  It may be network driven, cloud, or other, but the answer is you use Excel at some point. (SharePoint doesn't have this ability.)

    MouseOver the .xls document to get the Drop Down Menu. Choose Send to / Download a copy.  Save anywhere, just remember where.

    1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to where the file is.
    2. Right-Click on it, and choose Open With...
    3. Click on the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' checkbox. 
    4. Choose Excel from the list of programs.
    5. Click Ok
    6. Double-Click on the .xls file

    From here, Excel should open with that file.  If not, report back.  Feel free to delete the excel file that you copied locally.

  • Here is snapshot when i check file in windows explorer both files are there, right click on this, it only shows internet explorer. second image shows xlsx file open in browser.
    This xlsx file is opened when i click on it. I hope now you can understand

  • The fact that the correct Excel icon doesn't display next to the filename tells me that there is something amiss. 

    Since you are so unfamiliar with the concept of updating the associated application to a file extension, I think you need to get someone from your NetOps team to assist you. 

    They can also explain to you what type of Office Installation exists for your machine, network, enterprise or whatever they use.  He can also explain the correct way to associate the file extension to the correct application.

    I don't know,  You may know or don't know that if the required program of specific file extension is not installed windows will display file in the same way, like if you don't have any program which support pdf, so pdf file will be display the same way as rightnow excel files name are displayed.

     

    can you try it yourself upload both files. xls , and xlsx  in document library?

  • Yes, I am aware of the fact, which is why I stated that because it is not showing correctly that something is amiss.

    SharePoint is nothing but a storage area.  Like a fuel tank.  The fuel can sit there and do nothing until it is put into a motor, whereas the motor burns the fuel.  So, right now, you have fuel sitting in a tank, and no motor to burn it.  (At least for the .xls file.  I can't explain why you're able to open the .xlsx.)

    Without more information about your setup, I can't give you any better advice than I already have.

  • Hey, you've probably figured this out by now, but XLSX files can be displaye in sharepoint if excel services is runnng. You'll notice that when you open the file in sharepoint the URL says excelviewr.aspx. The excel viewer that comes with sharepoint cannot open xls files, only xlsx files.
