windows xp media center os trouble RRS feed

  • please help me..

    my laptop- a compaq presario - runs on windows xp media center edition
    my friend borrowed it and then when he returned my laptop
    i got this message saying that my system32\config\system is missing or corrupt.

    i tried installing another os on another partition and opened the system32 folder.
    i found out that the system file is really missing!
    please help me. i have very important files in that laptop.
    my friends tell me to reformat my laptop but i don't have the original installer.

    what can i do to save my laptop?

    please help.
