SCCM 2012 SP2 Management Point and DP Assignmennt Query RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Frenz,

    My SCCM Environment:

                     SCCM Version : SCCM 2012 SP2

No.of SCCM Sites      : One Primary Site

No. Of AD Sites     : 02 (ABC and XYZ)

                     No. Of Clients  : 750 (500 @ ABC Location and 250 @ XYZ Location)

No. of Site Servers : 03 (01 SCCM Site Server & 01 DB Server @ ABC Location and 01 Server with MP and DP role @ XYZ location)

                    Questions:

                      01. How Clients will identify its MP and DP (Based on Subnet or Nearby Location or Randomly). Hope MP will be selected Randomly, wat about DP

                      02. How to restrict the Clients to Use it's Site specific Management Point and Distribution Point ?

                      03. If the restriction is Possible, then when the Local MP and DP is down means Client will be reached to next location

  • 1: the DP which is being used, is based on the boundaries and boundary groups you configured. How did you configure these settings?

For intranet clients, the management point is usually located using the AD if you implemented the AD schema extensions. Otherwise, you can point clients to the MP during the installation. Did you implement the schema extensions?

    2 and 3: check this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/jchalfant/archive/2014/09/22/management-point-affinity-added-in-configmgr-2012-r2-cu3.aspx

  • If you are using SP2 you can set preferred Management Points for your boundaries and also use content location and add DP's to boundaries also.

Here's some info on preferred Management Points.

  • By default, MP location is random. It doesn't really use AD though. What is retrieved from AD is bootstrap information so that a client can start communication with the site. The client will always pick an MP at random from the list returned to it from the bootstrap MP though and not AD. Same with the SMSMP ccmsetup property: this does not hard-code in an MP, it simply sets an initial bootstrap MP to use to query for the complete list of MPs if the client doesn't know about any MPs or can't communicate with any that it does know about. The list returned to the client is ordered by HTTPs/non-HTTPS, domain, and forest so that a client prefers MPs in this order. If the option discussed by Paul is enabled, then it is also ordered by boundary group.

  • 1. Yes I configured 02 Boundary Groups one for ABC and another for XYZ location and assigned the Boundary Group for respective DP's

Yes, I have AD schema extension in Place.

2 & 3. Thanks for the article. So If I'm configuring the Preferred MP option, in event of MP failure the Clients will be assigned to another Site I Hope. Correct me if I'm wrong.

For DP I should enable the Fallback point for both Location?

  • Thanks for your Explanation Jason. Hope I can use the Preferred MP option provided that it will fall back to Another site in case of failure

  • I haven't checked on the behind the scene workings of the preferred MP in SP2 as yet but my assumption would be that if the preferred MP is not available then the client would fallback to a randomly chosen MP. Correct me if the assumption is incorrect.

  • Today I Enabled the Preferred Management Point Option, but still the clients from XYZ location are reporting to ABC Management Point and Vice versa. I checked the Boundary Group for DP is perfect.

    Any suggestions please?

  • Might be wrong but maybe it will change after 25 hours since the last mp selection.
