Server 2008 R2 to Server 2016

    Question

  • We are currently running a file server on Windows Server 2008 R2. We just bought a new server running Windows Server 2016 and have it all setup and ready to go. What is the best method to move all my folders/files over to the new server running 2016?

Thank you very much for any help.

  • Hi,

Based on my knowledge, for file migration,in general, you could use Robocopy and FSMT to migrate the Data.

You could keep the NTFS permission after migration with this tool.

    Robocopy : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733145%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

    FSMT : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10268

But for sharing permission about the file, since it is save in Registry. You may need to export and import the registry. Be careful about this operation, it is easy to mess all the Registry if your do something wrong.

  • Hi techcoor,

Please open the command prompt to be run as administrator. right click run as admin. If you already log on the server with an admin account, please still right click run as admin for the command prompt.

It seems that the user doesn't have full control on ntfs and share permission on the source and target share folder.

    Best Regards,

    Mary
